This is just a tiny sample of the more than 400 organizations who have endorsed the One Nation working together campaign. This is gonna be an historic event. The people attending the rally and these organizations are the true face of America. These are the patriots, the givers, the job makers, the voices for us, the American worker!  This movement includes human and civil rights organizations, union and trade associations, nonprofit organizations, youth and student groups, religious and other faith groups, educational, peace, environmental, and ethnic associations, and any other groups and individuals who are committed to pulling our country back together now.

Hundreds of thousands will be at this rally. Are any of you planning the trip to DC?

This is the part of America I am proud to stand with, these are the true blue Americans! Glenn Beck eat your heart out!

“We are not a loud minority looking backward,” Ben Jealous, NAACP president and CEO said. “We're a strong, multiracial majority looking forward. And we need to harness our majority and make our narrative of hope and unity a renewed battle cry for change.”

    United for Peace and Justice has this on their website...

    They are counting on all of us to support them in waging and winning this campaign. Winning this campaign is a big step toward stopping war and occupation in their tracks. Begin by signing the pledge, and sharing the campaign widely.

    Liberals are doing great things around the country, it's time they get recognized! Teabaggerdom is so "yesterdays news"!

    Subpoena power in BP oil spill investigation blocked by Senate Republicans

    Nobody is talking about this, WHY?? What's the story, does anyone know??

    Maryann Tobin:examiner.com

    Blocking subpoena power in disaster investigative commissions is unheard of. The terrorists crisis, the financial crisis and Three Mile Island commissions all had subpoena power. However, Senate Republicans gave no explanation on Monday when they blocked the Presidential Commission on the BP oil spill from having subpoena power to conduct the investigation. “These guys are in bed with the oil industry” said MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews.
    Sen. Byron Dorgan D-ND said, “At a hearing that I was at we had Halliburton, Transocean and BP, all of whom were involved on this rig and this drill, and you know what they were doing is pointing at each other. Well, listen, the only way you’re going to get to the real truth and find out exactly what happened is to be able to subpoena all of them and say, look, you have got to produce all of your books and records so that we can inspect them and understand what happened a mile under the ocean out there.”
    Protecting BP does not serve the American people, and it will not bring the truth to the millions of people along the Gulf Coast who are entitled to answers. Moreover, it is an insult to the families of the eleven men who were killed the night the Deepwater Horizon exploded. It is difficult to fathom how the Republicans can justify obstructing justice in the BP oil spill, but that is exactly what they have done. The bigger question is, how can Americans let them get away with it?

    Questions of Christian Hipsterism Part I

    Initially I wanted to write a blog about my reactions to the world of Christian Hipsterism. Of course, I have already gone down that bit of self-indulgence in a previous blog. While a blog is always at least a little bit self-indulgent, I’d rather spare my readers more boring stuff about me.

    Instead, it would be better if I asked all of you for your thoughts on Christian Hipsterism. Part of being a Christian Hipster means that you were a “Cradle Evangelical,” which I never really was. For those of you who enjoy reading you can check out the Brett McCraken’s article at Christianity Today because it is pretty cool.

    The article opens up with a fair description of what a Christian Hipster is. A Christian hipster is someone who was raised Evangelical from youth, desires to continue being a Christian, but wants to disassociate from the culture of Evangelicalism (including “Churchianity” if I may use the Internet Monk’s term). So if you were raised in this culture you are familiar with flannel graph Sunday school lessons, the obsession with left behindist end-times, republican-party Christianity, and people like Falwell, Pat Robertson, and the other crazy uncles of the Billy Graham generation. You were taught well “do not smoke drink or chew, or go with girls/guys who do.”

    The Christian hipster either remembers these things as something happily outgrown or denounces them with strong anathemas. Chrisitan Hipsterism can then be defined negatively. By what it is not.

    Positively defined, Christian Hipsterism is probably someone meeting at Mosiac West LA –a church I happily sojourned at for two years. A church like this embraces all the good things about the arts and entertainment. It assumes –even expects- that part of Christianity is an interest in creativity. It seeks to encourage Christians and even non Christians to deeply explore their talents and potential in music, dance, writing, visual arts and so on. This is not a crass form of evangelism. The arts are not meant to be advertisements for Jesus, but are rather a natural part of the Christian life.

    Another token of Christian Hipsterism is a casual willingness to discuss the sex from the pulpit. Driscoll, (“the angry one”), delivered a podcast on the Song of Solomon. McCracken cited this sermon as token Christian hipsterism. The sermon, “the Dance of Mahanaim,” paints a picture of good sex, in which both the man and the women fulfill certain roles based on their partner’s psychological disposition and biology. I listened to this sermon myself. Even here Driscoll still had to apologize to his audience that the Bible contained sex. Nonetheless, it was an upfront discussion of a normally taboo subject.

    A third pillar of Christian Hipsterism is an emphasis on concept of Social Justice. This is quite a nebulous concept, but it reflects a strong theological trend that wants to broaden the notion of the Gospel. The Gospel is not “go to heaven when you die when you accept Jesus.” The Gospel is not are mere acceptance of “salvation by grace alone.” The Gospel contains all these and so much more. The Gospel, as championed by Shane Clairborne, frees slaves, liberates the oppressed, and living a life of simplicity in face of consumerism. If the Kingdom of God is at hand, then the people of God will live according to new kind of life that resists and overturns systematic injustice in the world. Interestingly enough, this has a eschatological component, but that will be addressed another time.

    There is also an interest, among the Christian hipsters, of recovering liturgy. This will also be another blog.

    So, with no loss of irony, are you a Christian hipster? Are you not quite a Christian hipster? Are you to cool to be called a Christian hipster?

    You might want to comment on the blog and re-post it.

    Back To Church Sunday 2010

    A little later than planned, here is my sermon from last Sunday's really excellent "Back To Church Sunday' service. Church was P-acked with barely a spare seat and lots of returnees. Our most 'successful' B2CS yet...

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I’d like to share with you some very solemn announcements that have been made in Churches up and down the land in recent years. Some are taken from Church Notice Sheets, Notice boards and magazines:
    1.A report from the Church meeting: the Vicar spoke briefly and delighted the audience.
    2.Next Sunday is the Vicar’s last Sunday before he moves. Our special anthem will be the Hymn ‘Come ye thankful people come’!
    3.Ladies are requested not to have children in the church kitchen.
    4.A notice stuck to the hot-air hand-dryer in the men’s toilet at church had these words on it: ‘Press this button for a repeat of last Sunday’s sermon’!
    5.Tuesday at 4.00 pm there will be an ice-cream social. All are welcome. Ladies giving milk should come early!
    6.From a Diocesan Newsletter: ‘You will all be pleased to hear that the Bishop is making very slow progress after his operation’.
    7.The sermon next Sunday will be on ‘Hell’. A warm welcome will be extended to all.
    All of us came to church for the first time once. Sometimes we might have a a bad experience. Apologise. Sometimes the church may not communicate it’s message very clearly. Our reading this morning picks up on the people who became Jesus’ closest companions meeting him and coming to be with him for the first time and hearing a very simple message loud and clear.
    It is reasonable to assume that Andrew and John (the beloved disciple) had heard and met Jesus before this encounter. Our reading from John’s Gospel illustrates how they respond to what somebody else says, what John the Baptist exclaims “Behold the Lamb of God.” They follow because of what they have heard another say.
    John the Baptist referred to his ministry in the words of Isaiah, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " He had been preparing the way even to the point that his own followers would now consider and indeed make the decision to follow Jesus. John the Baptist is pointing the way to the Anointed One, The Messiah.
    Jesus is welcoming and he offers an invitation for his hearers to develop their relationship with him. To get to know Jesus, only if they wish too. "Come," he replied, "and you will see."
    We now witness the first missionary act in a new ministry that would become Christianity. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.
    We do not know a great deal about Andrew. Maybe that is because he lived a quiet life as he followed Jesus but he was the one who brought Simon to be renamed Peter to Jesus. Simon has a life-changing encounter with Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). What a morning that was for Simon Peter. His brother invites him to come and see.
    Can you imagine the scene. Your brother rushes home. “Quick Simon there is someone you must talk too.” “Who?” “This is the person; the one John the Baptist has been talking to us about. I have seen him. It is him. I am sure of it. Come and see and decide for yourself.”
    What a brilliant brother! You walk with your brother feeling self-conscious hoping that no one will ask you where you are going. It feels a bit strange to say I have an appointment with the Messiah. “There he is” Andrew exclaims. Jesus looks at you and smiles. “Welcome. You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).That’s it. Your life turned around in that very instant. You are now on the path of discovery to who you truly are. “You are Peter, The Rock on who I will build my Church,” said Jesus.
    How would you feel if you were Simon? You are standing looking into the eyes of God who looks right into your very being and declares what you will become. He looks at you and you challenges you to follow him. I wonder how he explained that to his family and friends. How would you explain that your name has changed. You are no longer Simon but Peter. That is the invitation that Jesus is offering to all of us. To change and transform us for good, for God.
    Gladys Aylward was born in London, in 1902, to a working-class family Gladys became a wealthy family's parlor maid at the age of 14. She trudged through this life of routine until one day after attending a church service a stranger confronted her with what being a Xn really meant.
    It transformed her and her outlook on life. She began attending Young Life services and reading about the far-away land of China from books in the vast library of her employer. This birthed an unstoppable desire to go to China herself. Gladys applied with CIM as a candidate for China. After reviewing her advanced age and test results it was determined that she was too old and unfit to learn the difficult Chinese language. At the age of 28, Gladys dreams were momentarily crushed; she decided if she couldn't go with CIM she would go on her own. Every month, Gladys would save all the money she could from the small paycheck she received to buy a one-way train ticket to China.
    On Oct. 15, 1932, Gladys left Liverpool Street Station by train to travel across Russia and eventually into Northern China. She carried two suitcases, a bedroll and wore a bright orange jacket. After a long and roundabout journey across Russia, Gladys finally set foot in her beloved China.
    Gladys began to lean Cantonese and eventually became a "foot inspector." The tradition of binding Chinese women's feet had recently been outlawed, but due to cultural perceptions of beauty it was still being practiced in many places. Gladys began traveling around inspecting the bones in women's feet. As she traveled she would tell stories from the Bible and many looked forward to the days they could hear these strange new stories.
    The people's esteem and respect for Gladys also continued to grow. What was even more remarkable was the ability she had to take on Chinese culture and language. By 1937, when the Japanese begin bombing nearby mountain villages, Gladys had so identified herself with the Chinese people that she refused to leave even as artillery shells begin to fall.
    After 20 years in China, Gladys returned to England in 1940. She was embarrassed to find that she quickly became a celebrity. A book, movie and TV documentary were all made about her life. To many Gladys became known by many as "The Small Women," the title of her biography. She continued to travel and speak about her beloved China, returning to Taiwan in 1957.
    Humble in spirit, Gladys once made this comment to a friend, "I wasn't God's first choice for what I've done for China. There was somebody else. I don't know who it was --- God's first choice. It must have been a man --- a wonderful man, a well-educated man. I don't know what happened. Perhaps he died. Perhaps he wasn't willing. And God looked down and saw Gladys Aylward."
    What about you and me this morning? What name is Jesus wishing to bestow upon us? Are we fishing in the wrong place as Simon was? Where are we being called to go? 70% of us, according to a recent survey, consider ourselves to be Christians, but being Christian isn’t about being nice, it is (as Simon Peter and the other disciples dscovered) about following and and listening and learning from Christ. Jesus doesn’t ask us to come with airs and graces, it’s not even about how we look. it’s not even about what we think we know about him He simply asks us to come as we are - for He accepts us and loves us just like that - and get to know him for ourselves. Amen.
    Glenn Beck...storefront preacher wanna-be...
    Glenn Beck, fearmonger-in-chief, wants you to be afraid because violence is coming and it's coming from the left. I guess it's all because we have a president named Barack Hussein Obama...
    Media Matters Eric Boehlert says Beck sounds like a storefront preacher....
    This idiot has followers, and we all know his followers have mental issues. So yes be afraid, be very afraid of Glenn Beck when he says things like this...and please take it seriously, it really isn't very funny. The man is truly sick and is hypnotizing the wingnuts, he is calling for them to be violent against liberals and our president, Don't believe it?  Then you must be one of the idiot followers.....
                                     .
    Congressional Black Caucus, is it racist?
    Our friend Malcontent has an interesting post up this week asking us why there is a Black Caucus in Congress and why do they feel the need to have such a group.
    he wrote this......
    "I my self have often wondered why they get away with something like this, and the whites don't dare form a White anything ! If someone in Congress suggested excluding African-Americans from an organization called the Congressional White Caucus, what would be the response from the media and the liberals in Congress? Why is it only termed racism when the bias is against African-Americans? I as a White person do not know all of what the Black community requires and I am quite certain that other races do not as well. So it may be exclusive to Blacks but I am not offended nor do I feel the need to call it racist.. And while we are at it, why is there a Hispanic Caucus also?"
    notice how I underlined the part where he doesn't feel the need to call the caucus racist......
     he added this.....
    "So tell me, what the hell do we need a Black or a Hispanic Caucus for? What do they do besides spread racism? And why does our so called president of “All the People” attend these Caucus’s for? Until I see the Black Caucus go to war or go the head of Congress and fight for “All the People” I say, What In Hell Do We Need These Racist Organizations For?
    All while we are on the subject, why in hell do we need a NAACP for, if that isn’t a RACIST Organization, then I don’t know what one is!"
    He goes on and on after that in a full blown rant that was about as racist a rant I've read in a long time.
    I have invited my friend Malcolm from Diversity Ink to do a guest post about the Black Caucus. We should stand up to people like Mal and confront their idiotic stance whenever possible. Do not cower to these people, confront them with the truth!  Stay tuned for Malcolms post!
    WHAT A BIG FAT BIGMOUTH BULLY!!!!
    How embarrassing for New Jersey residents to see Gov. Chris Christie in California beating up on a voter at a Meg Whitman town hall! Who the hell does this buffoon think he is and why did he have to speak for Whitman?? First of all the man in the audience, Ed Buck, just simply asked Whitman if she was gonna answer questions, and when he didn't get an answer he asked more forcefully but was respectful and inbounds. Whitman has not answered any questions from the voters and has not talked to the press.So what's the problem?? How can you run for office and not answer questions at a town hall??? She invites bully Christie to come speak for her because she can't speak?? Give me a break!!
    Talking to reporters after the event, Whitman said she figured Buck was planted in the audience by her opponents. How hilarious is that??!! Ed Buck was on Ed Schultz tonight (my reason for being fired up of course!) He said he is a multi-millionaire and wanted to talk with Whitman about tax cuts for the rich. He says he does not need a tax cut and cares about things like crumbling infrastructure and education. So wow, big fat fuckin Christie has to get in Bucks face wagging his finger and telling Buck to sit down and shut up. Isn't this what the right is accusing the left of doing, stifling free speech??!!! Buck says he is a republican but would NOT vote for Whitman!  Good for you Ed Buck!!
    Not only is tubby a bully but he's also a hypocrite...where was he when the rightwing nuts were screaming and disrupting town halls during the healthcare debates?? Give me a fuckin break....
    What is it with wingnuts and their LOVE for buffoon Chris Christie?? I don't get it. He is a bully. He stands up and belittles anyone who disagrees with him. His policies are Bush policies and are Bad news for us in NJ. He hates teachers, he HATES unions, he LOVES the rich and gives them the tax breaks while cutting billions from education! He hates kids too I guess.
    Mormons love Chris Christie, WHY?? Why do people in Utah and Arizona care about my governor? Glenn Beck loves Chris Christie and does a segment on his radio show every day especially for Christie. Bully Beck loves Bully Christie.  UGH!!!!!
    thanks for letting me vent.....
    Leslie has another incident of rightie violence here ,  its a good one!
    America spoke, but the GOP ignored....
    http://www.americaspeakingout.com/
    Have you been to the Republican website, the one where they are asking Americans for advice on what to put in their "A Pledge to America" plan?.........they call it a new governing agenda built by listening to you and focusing on your top priorities. OH REALLY???  First, the top two ideas are legalize marijuana, and end tax breaks for companies who ship jobs overseas, neither of which they used as great American ideas in their "Plan".
    "WE ARE NOT GONNA BE ANY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT WE'VE BEEN"  said Boehner
    so, if the Republican leaders really didn't care enough about average Americans ideas to put them in the "Plan" then who did have input in the "Plan"?
    As the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein reports, the GOP’s new “Pledge to America” was directed by a staffer named Brian Wild, who until early this year, was a lobbyist at a prominent DC firm that lobbied on behalf of corporate giants like Exxon. Moreover, the insurance industry is the leading contributor to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the Republican who led the effort. Consistent with its desire to placate lobbyists, the 21-page “Pledge” omits any mention of a key Republican mantra: a ban on earmarks.
    Okay, so the "Plan" is a farcical idiotic failure. It's nothing new...
    What is really in the Rethuglicans plan for America? What are they so stupidly hiding between the lines? Simply this, this is their plan for you......
    Repeal the healthcare bill
    Privatize Social Security
    Privatize Medicare
    Privatize the VA!!
    Make Bush's tax cuts permanent... for the rich!!
    What an embarrassment. Go ahead Republicans.....make our day!!
    Rush - Time Stand Still 3-22-1994
    Feeling a bit whimsical this morning. I was aware that my blog has been a bit neglected recently and I hadn't posted some music since the out and out aggression of the Korn track.
    I fell in love Rush in the early 80s and I have had the chance to see them a couple of times (thanks Cal I owe so much...)
    This song is full of 80s cheese, but I still love it. It was in my head this morning, I thought I'd share this live version.
    Enjoy!
    They are FINALLY ready to show America their PLAN!! Oooooooooh!
    REMEMBER, tomorrow is the " GOP Legislative Agenda for 2010" unveiling!
    The GOP leaders, well if that's what you call Boehner and Cantor, will unveil the masterful plan during a press conference and small business roundtable at a lumber yard in the boonies of Virginia.
                                             Old dead lumber=rethuglicans....
    The GOP plan is divided into five, distinct policy areas: 1) the economy, 2) government spending, 3) health care, 4) government reform and 5) national security.
    FOX was granted the opportunity to view the document ahead of its scheduled release. You can read the plan here if you must....
    Democrats responded to the plan,
       "Congressional Republicans are pledging to ship jobs overseas; blow a $700 billion hole in the deficit to give tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires; turn Social Security from a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble; once again, subject American families to the recklessness of Wall Street; and take away patients' rights," a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an email, adding Republicans will race back from the lumber yard in suburban Virginia to vote against a bill Democrats say that very lumber yard needs to get help.
    HA!!  It's a continuation of the Bush policies! They want to take us back to the vibrancy of the Bush era!  It's all up to you, the voters.
    My favorite progressive, Ed Schultz speaks....
    Don't forget the rally on October 2nd!
    ONE NATION shares the labor movement's policy agenda: An economy that works for all; good jobs, fair jobs, safe jobs, and more jobs; reforming Wall Street; repairing our immigration system; quality education for every child; and ensuring that everyone in America has the opportunity to contribute to and strengthen our country. Restoring workers' rights to organize and bargain collectively is at the heart of the policy agenda.
    The ONE NATION march on Washington on October 2, 2010 will charge up an army of tens of thousands of activists who will return to their neighborhoods, churches, schools and, especially, voting booths, with new energy to enact our common agenda. And on the same day, the labor movement will walk door-to-door in targeted states around the country, bringing the same message to union members exactly one month before the fall elections.
    The march aims to bring working people, young people, retirees, civil rights activists and many others together on the Mall to show the obstructionists in Congress that we are many and diverse, strong and that united-and we will fight together for the American Dream.
    Many of our unions are already committed to work as a part of ONE NATION. The unions of the AFL-CIO proudly join this coalition and pledge to work collectively to add our support to this great effort.
    Working people can make a difference when we rely on ourselves and act collectively. We are America. And together we can make our voices heard.
    They are scared of our Elizabeth Warren, wonder why! ;-)
    President Obama appointed Elizabeth Warren to head up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
    The appointment will allow Ms.Warren to effectively get the agency up and running without having to go through a contentious confirmation battle in the Senate. So what's all the hoopla about?
    This is from our friends blog, who shall remain anonymous for our protection....
    he writes this before he posts the Wall Street Journal rant....
    "His (Obama's)total disdain for America, and it's laws, and it's processes is despicable.
    If Dick Cheney had tried this, he'd have been accused of staging a Coup.
    LOL!
    The Wall Street Journal says it best!
    Whatever else can be said about this White House, it isn't afraid to poke a stick in the eye of its critics. How else
    to explain President Obama's decision Friday to put Elizabeth Warren in charge of the new Consumer Financial
    Protection Bureau while avoiding Senate confirmation and, for that matter, any political supervision.
    The chutzpah here is something to behold. The pride of Harvard Law School, Ms. Warren is a hero to the
    political left for proposing a new bureaucracy to micromanage the services that banks can offer consumers. But
    she is also so politically controversial that no less a liberal lion than Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd has warned
    the White House that she probably isn't confirmable. A President with more political and Constitutional scruple
    would have nominated someone else. Mr. Obama's choice is to appoint her anyway and dare the Senate to do
    something about it.
    The plan is for Ms. Warren to run the new bureau from an office at the Treasury Department. Instead of calling
    her the "Director" of the bureau—the statutory title for the organization's boss—Mr. Obama has appointed her an
    "assistant" to him and a special adviser to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.
    Mr. Geithner's supervision will be pro forma, however, because
    Ms. Warren rolled over him during the financial reform debate
    and has her own pipeline to the Oval Office. The President
    emphasized that Ms. Warren will enjoy "direct access" to him
    and said she would oversee all aspects of the creation of the new
    agency, including staffing and policy planning. For all intents
    and purposes, Ms. Warren will be Treasury Secretary for all
    consumer lending.
    We would have thought a Harvard law professor would object to
    the extra-legality of this arrangement, but then this is also the
    crew that gave us ObamaCare via budget reconciliation and put
    Donald Berwick in charge of Medicare without a Senate debate.
    Remind us again why the tea party critique of Obama
    governance is crazy.
    The new bureau was already destined to be a bureaucratic rogue. When Members of Congress objected to it
    being "independent" in the way Ms. Warren hoped, Mr. Dodd and the Administration cooked up a plan to make
    it part of the Federal Reserve without actually answering to anyone there. The bureau has independent
    rule-making authority and can grant itself an annual budget up to $646 million. It will draw this money from the
    operations of the Fed, so the bureau needn't deal with the messy intrusions of Congressional appropriators and
    will therefore receive limited Congressional oversight.
    Ms. Warren's bureau will dictate how credit is allocated throughout the American economy—by banks and
    financial firms, and also by many small businesses that extend credit to consumers. The bureau's mandate under
    the new Dodd-Frank law is to ensure that "consumers are protected from unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts and practices and from discrimination." If those terms sound vague and overbroad now, wait until Ms. Warren's
    hand-picked staff begins interpreting existing laws on fair lending and writes new rules.
    In a blog posting Friday on the White House website, Ms. Warren made her intentions clear enough: "President
    Obama understands the importance of leveling the playing field again for families and creating protections that
    work not just for the wealthy or connected, but for every American." Given the economic growth and jobless
    figures, maybe we should start calling this the "leveling" Administration.
    Though her mandate goes beyond banks, the banking system is likely to suffer the most damage. Ms. Warren was
    a vociferous opponent of allowing regulators charged with maintaining the safety and soundness of banks to
    control this new bureau. No matter how destructive its new rules may be, they can only be rescinded by a
    two-thirds vote of the Administration's new Financial Stability Oversight Council.
    And the bureau will now be staffed and shaped by an "assistant" with no obligation to appear before the Senate.
    The possibility that an appointed official could hold significant authority is why the framers wrote the Senate into
    the process of approving the President's senior hires. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution says the President
    "shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint . . . Officers of the United
    States."
    Article II, Section 2 also says "Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think
    proper, in the President alone," but Congress explicitly did not view the head of the financial consumer bureau as
    an inferior officer. On July 21, Mr. Obama signed a bill passed by both Houses stating that the "Director shall be
    appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate."
    We have here another end-run around Constitutional niceties so Team Obama can invest huge authority in an
    unelected official who is unable to withstand a public vetting. So a bureau inside an agency (the Fed) that it
    doesn't report to, with a budget not subject to Congressional control, now gets a leader not subject to Senate confirmation.
    What a bunch of cry baby hypocrites!
    I took this next paragraph from TC at Politics Plus, he has been a tireless advocate for Elizabeth getting this appointment.
     And the brilliant part of this idea — as explained by Shahien Nasiripour at the Huffington Post (see also David Dayen’s Thursday coverage) — is that the Dodd-Frank financial reform legislation allows the person charged with setting up this new agency to be an outright appointment, rather than a nomination subject to Senate confirmation.
    from a NY Times editorial:
    The banks don’t oppose Elizabeth Warren to head the new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection because she doesn’t get it. They oppose her because she does.
    YEE HA!!!
    Where's THE PLAN? Did I miss something?
     “I have six children, and five grandchildren and I’m scared to death, absolutely scared to death what’s going on in our country.” this came from an Eric Cantor supporter at his book signing.
    What are these people scared of?? What has President Obama and this administration done that is so scary? It boggles my mind, and not because I'm a partisan democrat, I really want someone to tell us in plain English exactly what Obama has done to scare you.
    There's got to be a cut in spending they say, there's got to be a cut in taxes they say. But when the GOP is asked what they will do to cut spending they have no answers. I thought their plan was coming out this month. Where is their plan? Did I miss that press release?
    Sen. Judd Gregg is one of the outspoken who is calling for extending the Bush tax cuts for the rich, all the while complaining about the deficit and spending. They do not look at these billions needed for tax cuts as spending. On ABC's Top Line, Sen. Gregg was asked where the spending cuts would come from to pay for the billions to be added to the deficit through the tax cut extension... (And remember, the GOP wants to make these tax cuts permanent)...
    Gregg said, " We’re building the deficit because of the spending, that’s where the deficit is coming from…that massive explosion of spending is where the problem is. It’s not on the revenue side, it’s on the spending side. So why put in all this additional spending. Why don’t you just start cutting spending first because that is where the problem is".
     WHAT?? Is that his answer? YES!
    A CNBC host asked Rep. Eric Cantor what he would cut and all he could come up with is.....  “We’ve got spending to cut in the short term what we’ve got is a huge problem in the long term,”
    WHAT?? These answers make no sense. Either they have no answers or they really don't want to turn off the voters with the truth of what their plans are. Cut Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, repeal healthcare reform.....
    One by one, GOP after GOP has offered the same rhetoric....Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) said in July that he  “would rescind the unspent stimulus funds,” which at the time, meant that he would do away with $55 billion in middle class tax cuts. Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) suggested eliminating the Affordable Care Act, thinking it would save $1 trillion, but it would actually increase the deficit by $143 billion.
    When Mitch McConnell was asked about the GOP's plans all he would say was, “I won’t scoop myself,
    and six weeks later he still had nothing to offer....If and when the GOP finally comes forward it will be the same 'ole same 'ole, less spending and cut taxes. This is the change America wants?? I don't get it....
    Mike Pence won the straw poll at the "Republican get-together" this week,  so even this man, who the rightwingers pick to be their candidate for 2012, had nothing more to offer than this...When asked what he would do besides cut taxes to help the economy he said tax cuts.
    They have no answers, no real plans to help our economy recover, and especially no plans to bring jobs back to America. They want our government to simply turn away from America, to let this country and it's people regulate themselves. They want to repeal finance reform, and we all know what happens when there is no regulations in place. But some of the people in this country seem to like it that way.
    Radical, Fanatical, Hysterical Wingnuts!
     I was watching Frank Schaeffer on Rachel Maddow the other night and while I waited for the transcript to come up on MSNBC I thought I would Google Frank and see what he's been up to. I found this letter he wrote to Republicans in March of 2009.  Nothing has changed, read for yourselves.....
    You Republicans are the arsonists who burned down our national home. You combined the failed ideologies of the Religious Right, so-called free market deregulation and the Neoconservative love of war to light a fire that has consumed America. Now you have the nerve to criticize the "architect" America just hired -- President Obama -- to rebuild from the ashes. You do nothing constructive, just try to hinder the one person willing and able to fix the mess you created.
    I used to be one of you. As recently as 2000 I worked to get Senator McCain elected in that year's primary. (McCain and Gen. Tommy Franks wrote glowing endorsements regarding my book about military service,  I have a file of handwritten thank you notes from Presidents Ford, Reagan, Bush I and II. In the 1970s and early 80s I hung out with Jack Kemp and bought into his "supply side" myth and even wrote a book he endorsed pushing his ideas.) There's more, but take it from me; my parents (evangelical leaders Francis and Edith Schaeffer) and I were about as tight with -- and useful to -- the Republican Party as anyone. We played a big part creating the Religious Right.
    In the mid 1980s I left the Religious Right, after I realized just how very anti-American they are, (the theme I explore in my book Crazy For God). They wanted America to fail in order to prove they were right about America's "moral decline." Soon after McCain lost in 2000 I re-registered as an independent in disgust with W. Bush. But I still respected many Republicans. Not today.
    How can anyone who loves our country support the Republicans now? Barry Goldwater, William F. Buckley and Ronald Reagan defined the modern conservatism that used to be what the Republican Party I belonged to was about. Today no actual conservative can be a Republican. Reagan would despise today's wholly negative Republican Party. And can you picture the gentlemanly and always polite Ronald Reagan, endorsing a radio hate-jock slob who crudely mocked a man with Parkinson's and who now says he wants an American president to fail?!
    With people like Limbaugh as the loudmouth image of the Republican Party -- you need no enemies. But something far more serious has happened than an image problem: the Republican Party has become the party of obstruction at just the time when all Americans should be pulling together for the good of our country. Instead, Republicans are today's fifth column sabotaging American renewal.
    President Obama has been in office barely 45 days and the Republican Party has the nerve to blame him for the economic and military cataclysm he inherited. I say economic and military cataclysm because without the needless war in Iraq you all backed we would not be in the economic mess we're in today. If that money had been spent here at home on renovating our infrastructure, taking us toward a green economy, putting our health-care system in order we'd be a very different situation.
    As the father of a Marine who served in George W. Bush's misbegotten wars let me say this: if President Obama's strategy to repair our economy, infrastructure and healthcare fails that will put our troops at far greater risk because the world will become a far more dangerous place. So for all you flag-waving Republicans who are trying to undermine the President at home -- if you succeed more of our troops will be killed abroad.
    When your new leader Rush Limbaugh calls for President Obama to fail he's calling for more flag-draped coffins. Limbaugh is the new "Hanoi Jane."
    For the party that created our crises of misbegotten war, mismanaged economy, the lack of regulation of our banking industry, handing our country to rich crooks... to obstruct the one person who is trying to repair the damage is obscene.
    Just imagine where America would be today if the 14 to 20 million voters -- "the rube base" who slavishly follow the likes of Limbaugh -- had not voted as a block year after year thus empowering the Republican fiasco. We would have a regulated banking industry and would have avoided our current financial crisis; some 4000 of our killed military men and women would be alive; over to 35,000 wounded Americans would be whole; we would have been leaders in the environmental movement; we would be in the middle of a green technology boom fueling a huge expansion of our economy and stopping our dependence on foreign oil, and our health-care system would be reformed.
    After Obama was elected, you Republican leaders had a unique last chance to send a patriotic message of unity to the world -- and to all Americans. You could have backed our president's economic recovery plan. Since we all know that half of our problem is one of lost confidence and perception, nothing would have done more to calm the markets and project resolve and confidence than if you had been big enough to take Obama's offered hand and had work with him -- even if you disagreed ideologically. You had the chance to put our country first. You utterly failed to rise to the occasion.
    The worsening economic situation is your fault and your fault alone. The Republicans created this mess through 8 years of backing the worst president in our history and now, because you put partisan ideology ahead of the good of our country, you have blown your last chance to redeem yourselves. You deserve the banishment to the political wilderness that awaits all traitors.
     A year and a half later and everything Frank said here could not be more true, in fact things have gotten worse, much worse . The teabaggers think they are on a mission from God and that is to take control of this country, our government, and the people. They hate big government intrusion yet they are forcing themselves on the American people, telling us we need to turn to God and that means voting for the teabaggers, following Gods word, living by the Bible, and if we don't do these things we are doomed. The religious right are the radicals we need to fear, NOT LIBERALS like they claim.
    Sarah Palin is loved by just a sliver of our population, oh maybe 1 or 2%. But these people are begging her to run for president! Why do we pay attention to such stupid drivel? We all know that stupid woman could NEVER beat Barack Obama, but the righties just love to say we are scared of her. THEY are scared of us, they know they have NObody to go head to head with Pres. Obama. It's a shame really, it's their own damn fault they let the radical right take over their party.
    Christine O'Donnell will end up being the teabagger darling who brought down the GOP. The sane ones know it but they are afraid to speak out for fear of Rush, their leader. She has already cancelled two Sunday appearances on the talk shows. Something about church activities....
    Bill Mahar is the one to watch for old clips of O'Donnell, he's got 22 of them and plans on playing them one by one til she agrees to come back on his show. What's she afraid of? Years ago she showed America the radical religious nutjob she is. Will she claim that was her younger, dumber self? And you thought Palin was dumb?!
    Sorry righties, we do NOT fear you and your radical candidates. It's gonna be a great Fall and we are looking SO forward to it!
    Fraud - a Biblical mandate,,,
    Here's a version of my sermon for tomorrow based on Luke 16:1-13...
    Money – most of us think it’s the key to everything. Success, happiness, a stress free life, but if we’re not careful it can also open the door to ruin, deception, corruption and greed. Jesus has much to say to us about our attitude towards wealth and stewardship – 19 of His 38 recorded parables are on the misuse of money and possessions, its an issue of fundamental importance to the Kingdom. Its not that Jesus is against us owning things - its just that He is against things owning us.
    This morning’s Gospel contains probably one of the most difficult of Jesus’ parables to understand. At first sight it looks as if Jesus is condoning corrupt practices, but when we look a bit closer we realize He’s not, and what is actually being applauded is the steward’s change in attitude.
    This parable takes full account of the commercial practices of the day – when many of the estates and businesses were owned by absentee landlords and looked after by stewards whose job it was to provide a reasonable return for the owner. In this case it was a business where merchants received goods on credit, and since Jewish Law prevents the claiming of interest from fellow Jews, the profit from such a transaction were in commodities like wheat and oil.
Although the steward was entrusted with the estate - given latitude to do with the owners resources as he wished and to profit from the way he invested his master’s wealth – he owned nothing of what he managed. But one of the surprising things about this story is that the hero seems to be a crook – a crook who has been found out.
    The owner had received complaints that his steward was squandering away his property – so he called him to account and when he was found wanting, promptly told him that he was heading for the high jump.
Here the Hebrew word used for “squandering’ is the same as that used in the story of the Prodigal Son – to describe self indulgence - when the younger son wasted away his inheritance. Jesus’ parable shows us what happens if we fail to use our resources in the right way before God.
    Like the steward, we have free access to use and profit from the gifts and resources God provides for this world, but own nothing of what we manage and like the steward we too fall far short of what is required.
    The unjust steward was too proud to beg and didn’t relish the thought of doing manual work, so he decided on another course of action, to make friends with the people who were in debt to his master. He used this last opportunity as the legal manager of the owner’s business to meet with some of his masters customers, to give them very significant discounts, so that they will show him favour when he is in need. Here Jesus tells us that we have to be alert to the workings of this world and the opportunities we are given, “...For in dealing with their own kind the children of this world are more astute than the children of light...”
    The story also illustrates the wisdom of spending money with an eternity in view using our wealth to help those around us. “...Use worldly wealth to win friends for yourself so that when money is a thing of the past you may be received into an eternal home...”
    The biggest thing about handling God’s resources is the attitude of our hearts. It determines how wisely we use what we have been given. When we borrow something from someone, such as a car, we tend to use it more carefully, work harder to look after it, we know it doesn’t belong to us and that we will be accountable for how we use it. Jesus tells us we need to apply that same attitude to all of God’s treasures that we handle.
The steward saw the urgency of the situation and changed his behaviour. Instead of investing in his present situation he started to invest in his future. Jesus also tells us that stewardship is not just about the big picture. If we are faithful with a little God knows we will be faithful with a lot. If we can be trusted with looking after one lost sheep, maybe eventually we will be trusted with caring for a whole flock. Here we have a man who found himself, came to his senses, and changed his direction and life. He didn’t put his head in the sand, but decided to act for his future well-being, he realized he was a slave to the wrong master, “...No servant can serve two masters – you cannot serve God and Money...”
    Jesus reminds us that our commitment to God must be greater than any other commitment in our lives. Jesus is looking for single minded people - people totally dedicated to God - whose main purpose in life is to serve Him.
    As Christians, our first priority should be using the resources that God gives us, to and through his church in the first instance, but are we? Our expenditure per week is £1,344 with 63% of those costs being my stipend, pension, housing & contributions to my ongoing training and the training of new clergy and us paying our part of the cost of running the diocese. And yet our forecast income is £1163 per week, a shortfall of £181. We are not living extravagantly. The issue is not a need to make efficiency savings. The issue is that the money we spend comes from nowhere else. These resources are God’s and we should ask Him for them, but we should also act wisely with the resources He shares with us.
    Where does our confidence for living come from - our bank balance or from God? Has money got greater control over us than we are prepared to admit?
    A well known speaker stood up in front of a group of people and held a £50 note in the air, “who would like to have this £50 note?” he said. Hands started to go up, “I will give this to one of you,” he said, “but before I do, I am going to crumple it up”, which he did. “Who wants it now?” Again, hands went up. Then he dropped it on the floor, stamped on it, and made it dirty, “Now who still wants it”, he said, still hands went up. “Today”, he said, “we have learnt a very valuable lesson. No matter what I do to this money, we still want it, because it has not lost any of its value - its still worth £50.”
Many times in our lives we will be dropped, crumpled, ground into the dirt, by the decisions we make, and the situations that come our way. But no matter what happens to us, we will never lose our value in God’s eyes. To Him we are still priceless.
    Do we value God as much as He values us? Does God take first place in our hearts? Do we serve God or money? We are all guilty of squandering the wealth we’ve been entrusted with. The question is what are we going to do about it? Are we going to wait till the last minute, like the unjust steward, or change now?
    Jesus calls us to use our gifts and resources wisely – and in a way that will honour God and ourselves. To invest in the ways that will lead us to Him and eternal life. Its God who puts the money and resources in our hands – so lets make sure we use them for His glory.
    Conservatives are absolutely giddy over their teabagging candidates
      It's really quite amusing when conservative bloggers get all giddy over the prospect of having teabaggers represent us in Congress. Like this blogger....
    "Folk's, I am as most of you must be, very excited about our prospect's this coming November as the news just gets better and better every single solitary day we get closer to 11/2/2010!
    The polls, the primaries, the very creative campaigns, the creative artistry of the bloggers"!
    Isn't that cute?? This guy is so excited for November 2nd, God Bless his sweet heart...
    Now for a bit of reality...
    Tuesday nights primary win for the GOP brought you the lovely but highly unqualified Christine O'Donnell. Here's a little background on the teabagger Palin wanna-be, OH, and Palin friggin loves her and has given her great advice, RUN from the MSM and hide at FoxNoise, Talk to nobody but Fox!!
    Anyway,,, she ran unsuccessfully for the Delaware Senate seat in 2006 getting just 4% of the vote. Then in 2008 she ran again and lost by 30% points to our wonderful Joe Biden (LOVE JOE!)
     Delaware Democrats,  you have been handed a gem, teabagger O'Donnell has all but guaranteed the Senate seat in Delaware will go to the democrat!  Proof positive, the rightwing teabagging republicans do not care if their candidate has the smarts to be a Senator, they don't give 2 shits if their candidate has experience, all they care about is defeating Barack Obama and stealing back some power no matter what its consequences are to our nation!
    Another Tuesday night GOP victory for teabaggers, the nomination of Carl Paladino for Governor of the great state of New York.. This is an amazing win for the teabagger republicans, for you see this man is down right racist, something the baggers are drawn to....Remember his background, he was caught forwarding emails with racial messages about Pres. Obama, birther claims, pornography, and bestiality. Of course when he was confronted about the emails he blamed Democrats!
    From Think Progress:  But perhaps what has made Paladino most loved among his base is his fervent, angry opposition to the Islamic center project near Ground Zero. He has called Park 51 an “affront to the American people” and claimed “it’s about the Islamists wanting to illustrate that they have conquered America by taking down the World Trade Center.” If elected governor, Paladino has pledged he would use the power of eminent domain to take the site.
    Paladino’s radical, divisive, and disturbing record isn’t setting well with one of New York’s most famous Republicans — former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato. “He is dangerous, at the least, he is mean spirited and he tries to divide people,” D’Amato told WCBS 880′s Peter Haskell. Along with former New York City Mayor Ed Koch and former State Comptroller Carl McCall, D’Amato also signed his name to an open letter declaring Paladino unfit for office:
    The victory of Carl Paladino in the Republican Primary was a disappointing day for all New Yorkers. This state has a long history of electing highly qualified, forward-looking statewide candidates — both Democrats and Republicans. Yesterday, however, anger overcame reason and enabled a fringe element to choose the Republican nominee. The end result was the selection of Mr. Paladino, a divisive figure simply not fit to lead this great state.
    At a time when we need leaders who can bring New Yorkers together, Mr. Paladino practices a destructive brand of politics that will divide our state. […]
    We need a governor who can take on the special interests, not one who is a special interest. We also need a governor who will bring New Yorkers together to take on our common challenges, not drive us apart. Through his own words and actions Carl Paladino has proven himself unfit to serve as Governor – he is exactly the wrong person to lead our state.
    D’Amato is a hardcore Republican. His opposition to Paladino is just further evidence of the growing cleavage within the GOP among its right-wing fringe and its leadership.
    There is no doubt about it, the republican party has moved so far right they are not recognizable anymore. They have morphed into the TeaParty radical fringe, a very scary radical fringe of the rightwing. Even today Karl Rove has done a complete reversal of his initial opinions about Christine O'Donnell. God forbid a rightie has an opinion that does not mesh with the wingnuts, Fox, and Rush Limbaugh. I'll bet he had to bend over and take a lashing like a Catholic schoolboy!!
    Glenn Beck called himself a tea party outsider.....
    Mitch McConnell said, "We can't let the people who've been hit hardest by this recession and who we need to create the jobs that will get us out of it foot the bill for the Democrats' two-year adventure in expanded government."  He said this on the Senate floor, by "the people", he means the billionaires..
    Christine O'Donnell said, "We took the Bible and prayer out of public schools, and now we're having weekly shootings practically. We had the 60's sexual revolution, and now people are dying of AIDS".
    Christine O'Donnell said this about co-ed dorm rooms, ''What's next? Orgy rooms? Menage a trois rooms? ... [Coedness] is like a radical agenda forced on college students.''
    Sharron Angle said this,  ''We needed to have the press be our friend ... We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported.''
    Rand Paul said this about the future of North America, ''I guarantee it's one of their(liberals) long-term goals, to have one sort of borderless mass continent.''
    Wake up Progressives!! These people are the face of the new Republican party, do not be fooled. These  radicals are not the true voice of the majority of Americans. Their voices and their votes will be of a minority of wackos who are hell bent on bringing America to its knees. They truely believe they can bring on "the rapture". Gods Army, remember?
    You'll never be able to masturbate in private again!!
     Christine O'Donnell won the GOP nomination for Senate in Delaware. This teabagger win over Mike Castle is truly unfuckinbelieveable. OMG, I can't even look at the TV, I'm sick to my stomach....You better get your house in order because if she wins the Senate seat she will personally be installing cameras in ALL of Americas bedrooms so the government can be SURE you are NOT MASTURBATING!  The teabaggers are for less government except for exposure of your sex life. They must know about your sex life!!
    Is the Grand Old Party dead?? Is that a good thing? These EXTREME teabagger candidates can't possibly win in November, RIGHT????
    Please tell me I'm right..
     Here's a little update...FACT:
    O'Donnell faces a numbers battle. She garnered less than 30,000 votes in a contest in which only Republicans could cast ballots. About 293,000 Democrats are registered in Delaware, compared with about 183,000 Republicans. YAHOO teabaggers, Delaware is a Democratic state, suck on that one Christine...
    183, 000 registered republicans in DE and she got less than 30,000 to vote for her? That says alot about the turnout from the righties in this most important primary...I can't wait til November!
     Hannity...I, I I um I I I.....
    You guys are screwd and ya screwd yourselves! Immoral Minority has it right... Everything Sarah Palin touches turns to shit!!
    President Obama gets kicked in the face once more, by the hideous wingnuts...
    Do you remember these quotes from our First Lady, Michelle Obama??
    Speaking in Milwaukee, would-be First Lady Michelle Obama said, "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."
    Then in Madison, she said, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
    Well today, and for the past 2 years I have been humiliated, embarrassed, sick to my stomach, and certainly NOT proud of the hateful, racist bigots in the rightwing of this country for the way they have reacted to our half black President Barack Hussein Obama!! There, don't like it? Tough shit! You are liars when you say it's not about race when you make a big deal about the president talking to school children for THE SECOND TIME since his presidency! I am NOT PROUD of my country! People around the globe are watching you disgusting bigots, they are just amazed that the people of the greatest country on earth could be so hateful, so demeaning to their president. It's shameful and I am ashamed to call myself an American when I have to live side by side with these rightwingers. I don't know how they can call themselves Americans.
    The Republican Party
    They really are pretty hideous aren't they??! Some of my liberals friends say we need a 2 party system, we need the republican party. But the party of no, no new ideas, no taxes, no government intrusion, no poor people allowed, no minorities, no immigrants, no gays, no sick and in firmed, no clean environment, no public education, no affordable college, no Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, no health insurance unless you are one of them....
    Care to add anything to the list??
    HOT DAMN!!!
    BUT WHAT ABOUT
    THE MILLIONAIRES?
    McConnell: Every GOP Senator Vows To Oppose Tax Cuts That Exclude Wealthy
    The Word as a Wordle
    Here is the wordle of this week's Gospel reading from Luke 16:1-13. I have to say that I have never really understood Jesus' teaching here. The passage reads:
    Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, “What is this that I hear about you? Give me an account of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.” Then the manager said to himself, “What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.” So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, “How much do you owe my master?” He answered, “A hundred jugs of olive oil.” He said to him, “Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.” Then he asked another, “And how much do you owe?” He replied, “A hundred containers of wheat.” He said to him, “Take your bill and make it eighty.” And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. ‘Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.’
    If the Wordle helps in interpreting Jesus' words it would seem that the parable is more about faithfulness, dishonesty and management than money itself. Is Jesus asking us to think again about what makes us wealthy? The accumulation of 'stuff' whether honestly or otherwise? Or is Jesus contrasting dishonest beheaviour with faithfulness and asking us to see how our motives match up? Another way of interpreting the story is Jesus saying use whatever it takes to make sure people come to know and experience the love of God. A further interpretation is to do with Jesus affirming shrewd stewardship of the resources at our disposal from God...
    The Parable of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, Lost Job, Lost House... - a sermon on Luke 15:1-10
    It doesn’t happen very often thankfully, but once in a while some of our neighbours go away. It’s a nice house, big garden, swimming pool. Perhaps I should clarify... When the neighbours go away they leave their teenage children. Now a bit of basic maths for you - teenagers + empty house + swimming pool X alcohol, music and summer nights = PAAAARTY! Now this doesn’t happen very often but there have been a handful of times when I have grumbled like the old man I am becoming... There will be this sort of partying in heaven says Jesus when one who was lost to God returns...
    I hate losing things. I live by a very special filing system which is far from infalible! When things are lost, it induces a sense of blind panic in me and utter relief on recovering the item in question. Jesus tells stories this morning that I think I can identify with - losing things. Important things...
    These stories of the lost sheep and the lost coin are preludes to perhaps Jesus’ greatest story of loss and recovery. You know the one. It tells of a lad who loses himself; of an older brother who loses his temper and sense of values and of a good father that never loses hope... a Heavenly Father that trusts that things that once were lost, people who once were lost can still be found... Recognise it yet?
    In the story of the lost sheep, it is clear that all 100 sheep are owned by the shepherd. As the flock makes it’s way across the barren wilderness the shepherd notices that one sheep is missing. He leaves the 99, taking an enormous risk in trusting they will be safe, and makes his way in search of the one.
    But we all too easily miss the scandal. Jesus has been openly criticised for spending time with sinners by the scribes and pharisees. They loved God and lived in hope of the coming Messiah. Their job was to interpret the Law of Moses for keeping it would prepare the way for His coming. They criticised Jesus because in him they saw one of their own and yet here he is fraternising with sinners like leather tanners, tax collectors women and shepherds. But the scandal deepens... ‘Which one of you,’ says Jesus referring to the Pharisees, has one hundred sheep...’ Jesus is inviting them to identify with a shepherd, a sinner!
    Jesus carries on speaking to the scribes and pharisees, ‘... Or what woman...’ Jesus now calls them to identify themselves with a woman, any woman, about whom they prayed each day, ‘Thank you Lord of the Universe, that you did not make me a woman...’ But this woman knows the value of what she is searching for - a silver coin. She lights a lamp and sweeps in the darkness and dirt to find her life and livelihood.
    I am often asked things like - I have lost my job, please pray for me. My wife has cancer and I am frightened of losing her, please pray. I have lost my faith - if there is a God pray for me. I feel so lost and afraid please pray for me. I have lost my house please pray... In the stories that we hear Jesus tell today, we have an assurance that he is never indifferent to these contemporary pleas in their lostness.
    Jesus doesn’t so much as teach about the scope of God’s love reaching out to those traditionally outside it’s orbit, namely to tax collector and shepherd, rather he gets the pharisees to empathise with the lost, and to ram the point home - Jesus models it by eating and speaking with them at table.
    Friends, God is a God who doesn’t sit distant from us and condemn us, but when we are a long way from him, he comes to us. He sits and shares food and conversation with us. When we are lost he hunts us out. He searches high and low in the darkest and most unlikely corners of the universe til he finds us. How does that sort of seaching love make us feel? If someone goes out of their way to see me, to speak to me, I want to make sure that I stop what I am doing, face them and give them my full attention. So it with Jesus. God loves the world, love me so much that he sends me Jesus... God loves me so much that he went out of his way to search me out... I should give him my full attention.
    One of the most wonderful experiences we had in New Zealand was stopping by the side of the road, and as we stopped watching a shepherd and his dog herd the sheep. The dog did not run barking after the sheep, but rather as the sheep wandered off, the dogs watched intellegently and intently, then they ran like hell to get in front of the sheep and they lay down across the path the sheep were wandering so when the sheep did wander that way they were gently turned back onto the right path. We are called to a double repentance, a double determinedness to live God’s way - by listening to Jesus, for that sends heaven partying, and the experience of being found by God’s never ending love for us in and through him.
    Jesus invited the Pharisee and scribes to identify with his search for those who are lost and his joy and finding those who are currently unaware of God’s love for them. What would church be like if we did the same - going out of our way to meet with and share God’s love with those who are currently unaware of His it where they are? For that’s what Jesus does. He doesn’t ask us to go to him. He comes to us. This is what he calls us His church to do - to emulate his example and the example of his Father. If we are to be a church at all - this must lie at the heart of what flows out of our meeting with Jesus as sinners around this table sharing bread and wine. To go out of our way to meet people where they are to talk with them, to help them to listen to Jesus and to encounter his love for them, returning rejoicing.
    Jesus doesn’t ask us to be like the pharisees - already aware of how they think God wants them to look - with the clothes of righteousness and an air of supercilious faith. Rather Jesus asks go with others just as you are, to be with him and to be found by him, to spend time with him, to listen to each other and especially to Him, and to rejoice with the whole of heaven as we seek to discover anew what it means to be loved by Him.
    The challenge for our mission to care for the lost, all those we encounter in our daily lives and all those we seek to bring back to the sheepfold on Back to Church Sunday, but not just then. For seeking out the lost does not in the least need any book to be burnt, It does not ask us to rebuke, to admonish or even look down upon anyone, for that was not the way of Christ. It calls us to this: First, think and pray; Second, run like hell; and third, be found lying about.For the lost, it is a precious and costly gift to be found at the right time in the right place. “Rejoice with me,” says Jesus, “for I have found . . . that which was lost.” Amen.
    I am indebted to Fr. Simon Rundell's sermon on the same passage for inspiration which can be read here.
    What's up with Boehner??
    I just read this on Comcast news...
    WASHINGTON — House Republican leader John Boehner says he would support extending tax cuts only for middle-class earners even though he considers it "bad policy" to exclude the highest-earning Americans from tax relief during a recession.
    One of President Barack Obama's chief economic advisers said Sunday he was happy that Boehner, R-Ohio, isn't willing to hold hostage an extension of tax cuts for those earning under $250,000 a year, or more than 97 percent of earners, to try to gain a continuation of breaks enjoyed by the wealthiest.
    This to me smells like the republicans are scared, they are scared the voters are starting to see them for the obstructionist, middle-class hating, millionaire loving thugs they really are! This falls into what Obama said last year... he'll be damned if Romney gets elected in 2012 and takes credit for all the hard work the democrats have done since taking over. (not his exact words but you get the jist!)
    So now all of a sudden the GOP is gonna start working for the middleclass? First we had Sen.Voinovich saying he will break the filibuster on the bill that will help small business, now we have Boehner coming out agreeing with Obama??  How about you Mitch McConnell, have anything to add??
    Wow, something stinks in Washington....
    Newt wants to scare the pants off of you!
    In a straight-to-DVD movie that will premiere tonight in D.C., Newt Gingrich and Citizens United warn Americans of the impending threat of radical Islam. As one of their talking heads says in the trailer, "This is the end of times. This is the final struggle."
    The movie, called "America At Risk," paints the world as a dangerous place filled with radicalized Muslims who want to -- and, importantly, can -- destroy America.
    "The war on terror, and the ideology behind it, have only just begun," Gingrich's wife, Callista Gingrich, intones while she and Gingrich stand in front of a green-screened New York skyline.
    Sick bastards! These conservative fanatics like Newt really want Armageddon. They are the ones pouring fuel on the flames. They have been seeking out the perfect war to end all wars for decades. I swear if conservatives get back the slightest bit of power we will see a war, it'll be their dream come true war. A war that will destroy the earth. They want to destroy the earth, they want to see God appear in the heavens and swoop them up! Sounds like radical Islam and the virgins doesn't it? So that's what Newt wants, his very own harem!!
    More rightwing scare tactics to get you to vote for them in the next 2 elections. If ya don't believe the liberals are destroying the economy then maybe you'll listen to Newt and believe the Muslims are gonna destroy America, and it's all happening right now, as we speak.  Fearmongering at it's best. If you're scared vote for Newt, but he can't save you, nobody can.
    Dubya scared Americans into voting for him with the 'ole terrorism line, Only the republicans can keep you safe bullshit,  so I guess Newt is taking a page from the shrubs playbook. Oh well lets just hope America is smarter then they were 10 yrs ago...
    Propaganda machine, that's all they are...
    So sorry to my enemy witch who says I don't write in my own words... this post is from a Media Matters email I received. In it's entirety because its just too damn good not to be! Enjoy!
    Media Matters: Fox News thinks you're all idiots
    Though the conservative media are fueled by overhyped, often-false, phony "scandals," every so often a story comes along that is so mind-bogglingly absurd that it exposes in no uncertain fashion the entire conservative media for what it is: a propaganda machine far more interested in pushing pre-determined narratives than conveying accurate information.
    For much of the summer, conservatives have been aggressively working to blur the lines between the radicals who attacked us on September 11 and the moderate Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf in order to claim his planned Islamic center in lower Manhattan is some sort of "victory mosque." This week, when conservatives were not busy trying to equate Rauf with lunatic pastor Terry Jones and his plan to burn Qurans, they were suggesting that Rauf literally commands the forces of Al Qaeda.
    On Wednesday, Rauf went on CNN's Larry King Live and warned of the dangers of perceived anti-Islam sentiment in the United States, especially as it relates to his Park51 project. Specifically, Rauf said that outspoken opposition to his project creates "danger from the radicals in the Muslim world to our national security." Before we get to the resulting epic conservative freak-out, it's important to point out that Rauf's comments track closely with comments from national security experts -- including Gen. David Petraeus -- who have repeatedly warned of the security implications of anti-Muslim protests.
    Undeterred by reality, conservatives claimed Rauf was "threatening" America when he made this entirely non-controversial statement of fact.
    Fox Nation broadcast as its top story that "Imam Threatens U.S., Says If Mosque Moves, Terror Will 'Explode.'" Pam Geller -- whose anti-Muslim bigotry leads her to view the world as a Magic Eye book filled with hidden Islamic crescents --announced in a headline that "Ground Zero Supremacist Imam Rauf Threatens America." Jim Hoft claimed in a post about Rauf's "threat" that the "radical" Rauf "warned that if America did not get down on its knees and allow the victory mosque to be built on the bones of dead Americans that ...'They will attack.'" Hoft instructed Rauf to "take your victory mosque and shove it."
    Rush LimbaughCharles Krauthammer and Media Research Center's Brent Baker speculated that Rauf may be engaging in "blackmail." Fox News hosted Debra Burlingame to say that Rauf had given an "ultimatum" and that his comments represented a "form of extortion." Fox also gave a 9-11 firefighter a platform to smear Rauf as a "tax-evading, terrorist sympathizing, Armani-wearing slumlord" who is "try[ing] to extort America" and "wants to build a Tower of Triumph on the graveyard of my friends." Bill O'Reilly fearmongered that Rauf's warning about violence may be a "self-fulfilling prophecy."
    This morning, the Fox & Friends hosts (and the accompanying on-screen text) referred to Rauf's comments as a "threat" at least ten times. Gretchen Carlson interpreted his "troubling" statement as "If you move it now, we're gonna attack you."
    The lone voice of sanity in the conservative wilderness was Chris Wallace, who twice stated that he did not hear Rauf's comments as a "threat." As always, this acknowledgment of reality made him the exception, not the rule.
    There is no gray area here: by pushing this story, conservative media figures have revealed -- as they do pretty much every week -- that they are either completely oblivious to reality, or they think their viewers/listeners/readers are. And they do this all the time -- remember the forty-eight hours during the 2008 presidential campaign when conservatives decided to pretend Barack Obama had compared Sarah Palin to a pig when he said "you can put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig" to describe McCain's policies?
    When the top-rated cable news organization in the country joins with leading conservative bloggers and radio hosts to smear someone as "threatening" to attack America for stating something that is widely agreed-upon by security experts, their dishonesty should be news. Unfortunately, since media conservatives seem to have a knack for escaping consequences for their serial mendacity, their role in the unwarranted demolition of Rauf's character will likely disappear down the memory hole.
    The damage will already be done, and conservatives' perpetual dishonesty machine will roll on.
