"Will Draw Comics for Food"

Hello again!

As some of you may remember, I asked for support for my comic back August. I was ecstatic with all the help and support that I got: about fifty people, including some people that heard about the comic via advertising and hearsay, joined the comic’s facebook fan page. People purchased items at the store. Finally, I received nearly twice the hoped for advertising budget via donations. This money was put to good use at both facebook and at topwebcomics.com

And I can’t wait for it grow. Recently, I have submitted some fan art to one of my favorite comics ever. I even finally found (thanks to those of you on tweb) another comic about quarter life Christianity over here! I’ve constructed new banner ads, and updated the comic page. (so I guess I’m not the only “Christian Webcomics” around) Soon there will even be one of those annoying “which _____ character are you?” facebook quizzes floating around!

But I still need support. Here are some ways, for those of you who like the comic and/or like me.

Guest Comics This is by far the most important way that you can help the comic. During December, I usually take a break to queue up the comic and more importantly enjoy advent. My comic is building some momentum, so I hope not to have a huge blank space in the updates. This is why I hope I can get a dozen comics sent in. It’s been done before.

Naturally, anyone who does a guest comic will have a permanent link to anything they want on the page –err within reason. I’m not doing your porn-cam.

I don’t care if you feel like you can’t draw (neither can I), if you don’t think you are funny, or even if you can only do “fan art” instead of a full comic. Just make something fun with my characters as a guest strip. I don’t care if I haven’t met you yet. In fact, it feels great to get fan strips from people I don’t know in real life. Cross-overs with comics are also fun.

Dig it and Stumble it Those of you who are familiar with sites like stumbleupon and digg can plug this blog at those sites. I am sure there are dozens of other sites like this out there. Every bit of exposure helps.

Finally, there is of course this:

Donate as much as you can. I hope for a $250 dollar average from each person donating. No, just kidding. I’ll probably get something like 5-20 from each person. Once again, if you donate $15 or more you will be forever immortalized in the comic as a character in the background. You can check out the facebook group to see who is already there.

This money will go into advertising the comic and towards support the two world vision kids that I support monthly.

Thank you for your support, and as always, thanks for reading.

More fun with Illustrator and Photoshop

I can't believe it. Actually I can. I have opened a Zazzle store dedicated to my comic. I may never make a cent, but I sure have fun making clever shirts and mugs. I think my favorite is the "Free Market Good" shirt.

An open letter for supporting my comic

*edited to add "Character's Page" link now fixed*

As I call many of you my friends, I know that many of you have enjoyed my comic. This makes me happy. It has been comments like, “I would make Love to the Uberbean” that have really motivated me to come back with this story. Which returns … well … now.

To get ready for the comeback, I made significant changes. The website is much improved now with both a “characters” page and a “support” page. The original “first strips” I have decided are no longer canon for the comic. If click the “first” button, you will find that it takes you to a storyline much later in the comic’s development and much improved in the artwork. Regarding the artwork, the new comics that are uploaded and ready to go all contain a standard sized box ratio. I did this in hopes of publishing it as a book someday.

The next story is deeply involved and very serious; I intentionally invoked both “Lost” and “Watchmen” as influences for the arc of the story as well as a bit of artwork. It will last six weeks and is my longest story yet. The main character is, Andy –the slightly disappointed pastor’s kid. I am fairly certain that the Uber bean is the only comic on the web that deals with quarter life Christianity.
The short strips that come afterwards are back to humor. The Halloween story I am working on right now will also have humor in it. So don’t worry, the comic will still be funny.

In order to promote this comic, I fully intend to buy advertising space. The first place I intend to buy is at my old favorite and inspiration real life. The smallest set of impressions costs 50 dollars. Yet still this is not money that I have at the moment. This is why I am requesting support.

Anyone who helps me reach the goal of fifty dollars will be greatly appreciated.

Furthermore, I will offer a black and white “preview” of the story to anyone who donates at least $3 to the cause. Finally, people who would like to see their likeness in later strips can donate $15. This donation drive will go until the end of the month.

Thank you for the support. And be sure to check out the character page to learn more about the comic.

Webcomics I like

This is one of the more random blog entries I’ve ever done. But I thought that I’d post this. I love webcomics. They’re fun. I don’t even read regular newspaper comics anymore. I haven’t in years in fact. Here’s a list of comics that I like.

Manatheater - Don’t bother looking for it. This comic is dead. The web site that formally housed it isn’t even up anymore. Nonetheless, clever flash comics based on Secret of Mana was very successful in its prime. It is a shame it never finished. Yet, I do understand that authors, and thus their webcomics, move on in life!

Real Life - I have read this one since about 2001 when I was working at internet tech support job. This comic helped inspire my own. The flux of this comic reflects the flux of the real life of its author. I don’t read it regularly anymore, but it is still amusing when I do.

Sharper - this is another dead comic. I first found out about it a few years ago. It is a creative film noir type comic. The first story was good, unexpected, and sad. I miss seeing it update, but I suppose its author has a life to attend to as well.

Goblins: life through their eyes - What happens when a long time dungeon master transcends nerdom and becomes a good storyteller? You get something like this comic! This comic is full of comedy as well as serious drama. The idea of the story is what is life like for all the goblins and other “XP fodder” creatures in a RPG world? A few decide to become adventurers. I have been amazed again and again at this comic. It in fact, warrants a full review another time. For now, take a few clickings and check it out.

Thinking about the Uberbean, for the first time in a long Time.

All I have to say right now, is that it is great to have my mind on something fun. Yes, I've done some haphazard brainstorming for the possible return of my comic in about six months. I hope that all of you reading this will give me some feed back on my possible story arcs and such. For those of you who do not know my comic, it can be found here

Here are few things I've come up with.
Short Ideas that can be one shots or can be expanded
-Ian discovers that drinking significant amounts of Jager is the only way to understand Foucalt.
-The four guys realize that they never have had a shirtless bonding time. They create such an occasion.
-Employees at the Coffee shop start coming up with clever nicknames for the drinks the anorexic girls order. "skinny bitch latte" or "starving ghandi iced tea."

Longer Story Arcs?
-Mark Guyer finally sets up Mark Collins on a date with another girl. Mark Collins does not realize that this is a date, and the event will likely involve some shanghaiing. Mark Collins and Becca remain naturally star-crossed. How might a inexplicably shy guy get lovingly shanghaied by his best friend?

-Either Becca or Jenny will develop a relationship with a guy by the name of Peter Knack. The relationship is odd at first (first boyfriend for either?), and becomes increasingly awkward. Turns out that Peter Knack is still primarily interested in videogames and such. He does stuff like forgetting his girlfriend's birthday because he has to raid with his guild, grind to level 80, farm blindweed etc. Eventually Becca/Jenny dumps him explaining, "you don't want a girlfriend right now, so why am I here?" Ian, Andy, and possibly the Marks play some kind supportive role. Later they discuss whether they are justified in feeling just a little bit of animosity towards Peter. Which girl is the better candidate for such a relationship?

-Mark Guyer creates a new product to sell to all kinds of College students; a device that will let you meet yourself five years from now. The characters try it out. Future Andy is married, but refuses to tell present Andy when/who/how etc. Future Ian is half way done with a three year PhD, but is taking a break. Future Mark Collins finally got his shit together, finished college, and is working as a programmer somewhere. Dare I say, San Deigo? Becca and Jenny meet their future selves as well. Mark Guyer, upon finally meeting his future self, destroys the machine entirely. He refuses to tell anyone what happened when he met his future self. Where should the girls be in five years?

Possible Major Changes?
-Mark Collins gets his shit together. After working an thoroughly unsatisfying job with megatech computers, Mark finally decides to get his C.S. Degree. He begins embarking on such a journey. What about working at a story like CompUSA or Best Buy for several years would make someone realize "Shit dude, my life is totally not going anywhere..."?

-Mark Guyer also decides to change job from the computer sales floor. This is likely forced by some external circumstance, since Mark Guyer has no actual ambition although he has great ability. He begins working for Kutless Kitchen Kutlery, a direct marketing job that is no way like Cutco. He dominates, advances, but later does something completely stupid and that makes him leave either of his own accord or because he's fired.

-Andy gets a girlfriend.

-Jenny, the Missionary kid from Taiwanland, extroverted girl and vocal performance major, gets further developed. She becomes a more essential part of the cast.

other back up characters get introduced?

-Manny (Immanuel) The Nihilist. A deep thinking nineteen year old who insists that he is not just an adolescent emo kid who needs to grow up. He is a village atheist who frequents the uber bean coffee shop and tries to get into debates with the evangelicals there.

-Yolonda, Andy's ex-girlfriend, finally comes to Trinity Pacific University. She's only been baptized in the holy spirit for a year now.

So you there you have it. My rough sketch of could be the uberbean in 2009. Please! Give me some feedback and let me know what you think.
